This year I am extremely pleased to chair Cancer Support Community’s 5th Annual Hope Walk, scheduled for Saturday, May 18th at Heather Farm in Walnut Creek.

My husband, Rich, was diagnosed with a rare, aggressive form of Stage 4 colon cancer in 2013 after a clean colonoscopy 18 months previously. Like other couples faced with this overwhelming, devastating news, we were blessed to be referred to Cancer Support Community (CSC).
CSC was a calming sanctuary for us - providing various educational, emotional, and physical workshops to supplement and redefine the overwhelming amount of information provided by our doctors. We were also able to take advantage of support groups tailored for individuals with cancer like Rich, and a different one tailored for caregivers like me.
The greatest gift CSC has to offer is the opportunity to be there for other individuals with cancer and their caregivers - no one really knows what you are going through like someone who is going through it themselves.
Since my husband passed in 2015, I have been volunteering at the Cancer Support Community. I took advantage of the Grief & Loss support group offered for a while, but the best therapy for me is to be at the front desk to greet current and prospective members when they walk through the door, making sure they are comfortable, and letting them know that they are welcome here and that they have come to an exceptional place for information and healing...
